"now they have to attend to the fear mongering over the Ground Zero mosque." Is the inflammatory language constructive? "Except the proposed mosque and community center is not at ground Zero – it’s several blocks away and a few hundred feet from an existing mosque. It is TWO blocks away (close enough the landing gear from one of the planes damaged the existing building); and if there is already a mosque right there then it begs the question. "Muslims have been praying inside the Pentagon since Sept. 11, but those opposing the Ground Zero mosque have been strangely silent." They have been silent because Muslims exercising their constitutional rights is not the issue here. The fact that you have a right to do something does not make it right to do. "While there may not be a logical foundation for such vehemence — justified or not, it exists." Indeed it does, and that is the reality we must deal with; but I challenge the lack of logical foundation. Throughout our history, at the state and local level, we have opposed and/or prohibited things purely on the basis that they offend the sensibilities, that they engender moral outrage, or that they involve strong negative imagery (real or perceived). No one is opposed to building the kind of facility described: they oppose building it THERE. That indeed involves emotional issues, but that doesn't necessarily make it irrational. "those who hope to lead are spending too much time exploiting ...the mosque placement at the expense of other very pressing issues." False Dilemma: we can do both, and I contend that we should do both. Both are legitimate issues for debate and concern.

Let me answer Olcoot. He says: "If I move to France, I’ll learn French" Good for you. but that's YOUR choice. If you want to live there and speak whatever you want, so what? Who should care? Do your thing, but leave me alone. As long as I obey the law, I should be allowed to learn or not learn any thing I care to. As long as I obey the law, I should be able to speak whatever language I want. Government should leave me alone.

I also grew up here, a country boy, and knew a few folks who took English as a second language in High School.
"We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt, 1907.

The illegal immigration problem is a completely separate issue. The issue here is allegiance. If I move to France, I'll learn french; if I move to Italy, I'll learn italian; if I move to Australia, I'll learn to speak whatever it is they speak there (it certainly isn't english!). You move to America, learn the language.

"What kind of justice is that?" It is exactly the kind we've chosen, when we presume a teenager is not accountable for his actions. A friend told me several years ago, the Judicial System is no longer concerned with Justice: it is concerned with the letter of the law. He was right. Until we do away with notions that certain classes of citizens are not accountable for their actions, and do away with Case Law, which eliminates the ability of a Judge to actually use judgement, this kind of injustice will continue. I think it was Oliver Wendell Holmes who said it is not a court of Justice; it is a court of law. Don't confuse the two. The courts have little to do with Justice and God has little to do with the Law.

JBS,

I agree with you on the freedoms that we don't have, and it is an infringement of human freedoms to force some to pay for others.

When I say government isn't the biggest threat... well, my next post should clarify it.

I tend to disagree with, at least, some of this. First is the notion of a "free country". Let's use social security as an example. Do you have a choice in participating in social security? No, you do not. If we lived in a "free country" you would have a choice to participate or not to participate. One of these is called freedom, one is called tyranny. This, to me, is what the TEA Party is all about. You could use the same example of SS for welfare, medicare, selective service, etc. In all of these you do not have a choice, that is called tyranny. The TEA Party started with taxes and maybe it has moved to other areas. I can not speak for anyone else but I want less taxes, less government(less tyranny)and more freedom. As of now the only group I know who is preaching this message is the TEA Party. I'm sticking with the TEA Party. So, as you can see I do not believe we live in a "free country".

As Walter Williams frequently points out, this stuff is NOT rocket science: it may not be easy, but it is relatively simple. It is exactly the same principle as personal weight control. Calories in greater than calories out equals weight gain [dollars in greater than dollars out equals budget surplus]: calories out greater than calories in equals weight loss [dollars out greater than dollars in equals budget deficit].

Despite all the squabbling about how to manage that budget problem, there's really a very simple way to resolve the problem: again, not easy, but simple. For every line item in every annual budget, ask the question "What is the constitutional authority for this item?" That question alone would immediately cut the fed budget in half (or more) because a huge portion of that funding has absolutely no constitutional justification. Then ask if the item is necessary to the national interest: that totally eliminates so-called 'pork'.

The problem is not that we don't know how to fix the problem: the problem is we don't want to fix it. If we did, we would elect representatives who are committed to solving the problem, and take the hard knocks associated with changing our lifestyles to reach the goal; just like weight control.

We can't blame Obama, or Bush, or Democrats, or anyone else: we're here because of our own bad choices. I have a sign that I use in some training I do: "Like what you've got? Want more of the same? Keep doing what you've been doing, don't change anything."

[...] Louisiana State Senator A.G. Crowe (R, Slidell) is introducing a bill for the 2010 legislative session in Baton Rouge that would make Obamacare illegal if it violates state laws, effectively making Obamacare null and void in the Pelican State.Senator Crowe states that his bill "provides that no law or rule shall compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer or health care provider to participate in any health care system or health insurance."Crowe's proposed Senate Bill (download .pdf file) begins as follows:HEALTH CARE. Prohibits state or local governmental coercion of any Louisiana employer, health care provider, or individual to compel participation in any health care system or health insurance plan.Crowe insists that Obamacare violates Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution and "is therefore unconstitutional." He also feels that the president's plans violates the 10th Amendment among others. In addition to the proposed legislation nullifying any possible federal healthcare laws, Senator Crowe has asked Buddy Caldwell, the State Attorney General, to determine if, in his opinion, Obamacare would violate any state laws, the Constitution, or would pass onerous unfunded mandates on the state. (download .pdf of letter)Senator Crowe has been involved in many conservative projects including the 2009 State sovereignty resolution, a Tenth Amendment policy project. Also in 2009 Crowe introduced a resolution proclaiming April as "Abortion Recovery Awareness Month" which was signed by Governor Jindal. Crowe also became a signatory to AFP's No Climate Tax Pledge. (Crowe's committee assignments and associations can be seen at Project Vote Smart)Senator Crowe is part of an increasing push by state lawmakers to affirm state sovereignty and Tenth Amendment rights, laws that will likely come before the U.S. Supreme court in short order once Obamacare is passed in D.C. According to Michael Boldin's Tenth Amendment Center some 25 states have introduced state sovereignty resolutions or bills that would nullify federal laws that the state legislature feels violates their laws and those of the U.S. Constitution.(Hat tip LouisianaConservative.com) [...]

I remember that man saying that at the Reserve townhall meeting. The only problem is, we are a socialist nation. We have regulations on top of regulations. We have welfare, social security, medicare, medicade, fannie mae and freddie mac, a communist taxing system, the military draft, unconstitutional wars, government giving money to private industries and foreign countries, a military presence in approximately 120 countries, Vermont has a socialist congressman, the list goes on and on, ad nauseum.

Though I do appreciate the statement, he is about 150 years too late.
