The tragedy of the Virginia school shootings will resonate with us for years to come. Questions are surfacing now about how it could have been prevented. Some blame guns, others blame a lack of security at the university.

But the event just reminds me of something we don’t like to admit: the world is a vicious jungle and a dangerous place where horrific things happen without warning. We have limited control over the course of our own destiny. At any time and without warning, our lives and the lives of those we love, can be wiped out. There is only so much we can do to prevent it.

This is the only real “lesson” that can be gained from such events as those that have transpired today; we must live each day, each moment, as though it were our last.
