INAUGURAL D’ARBONNE BBQ FEST & LA. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BAR-B-QUE COOK-OFF

SANCTIONED BY the INTERNATIONAL BAR-B-Q COOKERS ASSOCIATION.

Festival season is in full-swing in North Louisiana. With the Mayhaw Festival in Marion, Louisiana last weekend, the Riverboat Festival in Columbia, Louisiana this weekend, and the new D’Arbonne BBQ Festival the following week, the fun in the sun is really getting cranked up. Even more fun is on the near horizon with the Watermelon Festival and the Peach Festival.

All you “Backyard Gourmets” that think you have the perfect barb-b-que recipe and cooking techniques for the best barb-b-que in the State, you now have an official forum to prove your claims and compete for bragging rights as the State Champion BBQ’er.

The D’Arbonne BBQ Festival is taking place at the Lake D’Arbonne State Park that is truly the “gem” of the Lake. The facilities at the Park are excellent and well tended. Making things even better for the Park and the Festival will be the completion of the four-lane project of US Hwy. 167 (long overdue) which runs through Bernice where LA Hwy 2 will connect travelers on to the D’Arbonne State Park. Unless it is absolutely necessary, I do not recommend using LA Hwy 15 to make the journey for no other reason than the section through Union Parish is the most dangerous and most neglected section in the entire State. But, if you get a kick out of dodging NASCAR chip trucks, you might find it exciting, especially with no shoulders on the road. I digress.

The D’Arbonne BBQ Festival will likely attract political hopefuls as “tis’ the season”. One of my favorites attending the Festival is Representative Mike Walsworth who is running for State Senator in District 33. Starting his Union Parish duties early, Mike has agreed to be a judge in the BBQ Cook-off. All the good folks in that district should take the opportunity to come and meet Mike Walsworth. Mike is a strong conservative and has always been loyal to North Louisiana. As I have said before, Mike Walsworth and Bobby Jindal will make a great combination for Northeast Louisiana.

Many thanks to Mr. Horace Kitchens for doing a great job of organizing this festival and for focusing the proceeds to worthy charitable organizations. This year DART of Union Parish and Cheerful Givers of Louisiana will receive the proceeds of the festival. DART works to help families affected by domestic violence and Gift Givers of Louisiana, provides birthday gift bags to homeless children ages 3 to 12. “They (Cheerful Givers of LA) are run 100% by volunteers. Horace Ketchens the director of Cheerful Givers of La. came up with the idea to have a BBQ festival as a way to help raise money for non-profits and also to give people an opportunity to attend a family event.”

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded in several divisions and a special “business challenge” cook-off will be offered, too. There will be live music, arts and crafts, and later Friday night there will be a street dance. If you like the best barb-b-que in the State, great music, lots of fun, and good folks wanting to help the unfortunate, please, come out, enjoy yourself, and help make the first annual D’Arbonne BBQ Festival a really big success.
