News will print Batavia’s daily, two other weeklies starting Aug. 30
The Buffalo News (Buffalo, NY) July 1, 2010 | Matt Glynn The Buffalo News will print Batavia’s daily newspaper and two weekly publications starting Aug. 30, under a five-year agreement with the Batavia Newspapers Corp.
The Buffalo News will print the Daily News, which publishes Monday through Saturday, plus the Drummer Pennysaver and the Livingston County News. The dollar value of the deal with BNC was not disclosed.
BNC will close its own printing operation, eliminating six full- time and 14 part-time jobs. Continuing commercial printing operations at the plant no longer was viable after USA Today ended a 25-year printing agreement, said Thomas Turnbull, BNC’s publisher. That work was shifted to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle in what he said was mainly a cost-cutting move. Both papers are part of Gannett Corp. in our site livingston county news
“It wasn’t an issue of quality,” Turnbull said, citing quality awards BNC had earned from USA Today several times over the years. go to website livingston county news
Turnbull said some of BNC’s presses are more than 35 years old, and without the USA Today work, it could no longer afford to operate and maintain the equipment.
The Buffalo News installed a new press line in 2004 and also prints the regional edition of the New York Times and the Chautauqua Star Weekly.
The Daily News has a daily circulation of about 11,000 and Saturday circulation of about 13,000. The paper serves Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans counties.
“We have a press window that fits their press requirements,” said Robert J. Casell, executive vice president at The Buffalo News. The Daily News comes off the press in midmorning, except on Saturdays, when it is published early for morning distribution.
The Drummer Pennysaver has circulation of 18,000, while the Livingston County News has circulation of about 6,000.
The Buffalo News will transport the papers to Batavia, where BNC will handle their distribution. In addition to printing some other papers on its presses, The Buffalo News provides home delivery of the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and New York Times.
