Saturday morning had a full slate of business in front of the Young Republicans with Mary Matalin giving the first speech of the day. I had a brief moment to chat with her prior to this picture being taken. I said “Mary, I’m from Baton Rouge so I have a great appreciation that you married a Louisiana man, it’s just that you picked the wrong one.”
To which she responded “Oh he does alright.” I hope she understood that it was a joke and nothing was meant by it.
But Mary attended the conference in support of Fred Thompson and when he walked through the doors, the crowd burst out into a roaring standing ovation and continued while he glad handed the audience to the stage. Like all politicians, his speech was well versed and nice.
Like Duncan Hunter before, Fred worked the crowd and took the time to listen to the people around him. It’s been said that you can tell a lot about a man’s character by how he treats those who can do nothing for him, and Fred treated everybody well. More importantly, so did his people.
I suppose it helped matters that Fred Thompson had a large contigent of people there during the whole weekend, and was surprised, at least temporarily, to see him come only in second. I’ll get to that in the next post. One area that I was disappointed in Fred Thompson was that, even though it was some what anticipated that he would officially announce his candidacy for the Presidency, he didn’t do so.
My impression of Fred Thompson as a Presidential candidate? A+ candidate.
